Everyone enjoyed the summer spread of a variety of dishes brought by members to pass and share. Larry Dapolito played Steven Foster Music for those present to sing along. Carol Bailey gave a commentary related to the life of Steven Foster and the era during which he wrote. Foster was born on July 4th 1826 and died after a fall at the age of 38 on January 10th 1864.
Beautiful Dreamer, Camptown Races, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, My Old Kentucky Home, Oh! Susanna, Old Folks at Home were the selected songs and copies of them may be obtained by visiting the Brick Church Museum. A lot of History of the time can be found in the wording of Foster's songs.
$5000 Grant Received
A $5,000 grant sponsored by Robert Oak, State Assemblyman was received last week. GHS board members Ruth Gillette and Joan Thoms worked very hard with Chandra Theetge of the Parks and Recreation Department to obtain a grant to cover some of the costs of repairing the Mill Museum. The Galen Historical Society is very grateful for this grant as the costs of maintaining our buildings are very high. As soon as we can obtain a contractor who will work within our means and our specs, we will begin work to bring the mill up to par.
August Festival Photo Display
For a half century, Clyde has had photographs displayed in downtown store front windows during the 15th of August celebration for all to enjoy. For many years, Mr. Bill Sheehan was responsible for doing this, and he took most of the photographs that range from the years 1940-1970.
We have been going through some of these photos and trying to preserve them by mounting and putting them in frames. This is a tedious and back aching job. Steve Groat was responsible for putting together some of the frames which he used in the Sports Hall of Fame. The job was taken over by Rose Jeanne Strakal, Colleen Volpe, and Sharon Wood last year. The GHS put in $200 to get started and obtained a Hoffman grant of $600 to continue funding this project by purchasing frames and photo mounting corners. This is an ongoing project.
Some of the framed photos will be on display this year in the downtown store windows and in the SPAN Headquarters (formerly Buddy D’Amato’s bldg) from August 13-16. Pay attention to the number of the frame and the dots. We need help in identification of the subjects and locations.
When asked who these pictures belong to, Rose Jeanne replied, “They belong to all of us who love Clyde. Our village is fortunate to have these memories”. Sometime during the coming year we hope to have an exhibit in the Brick Church Museum to show the framed photos to those who were unable to see the downtown displays.
Heritage Park Memorial Walkway
It’s finally going in! After several years we can see the Village of Clyde crew laying the bricks in time for the August 15th celebration.
