GHS Events: Fall/Winter 2009
Winter Hours and Meetings
We are now on winter hours and open only for special events or requests. Our Board meetings are held in the CS Public Library meeting room to save money and conserve energy in our museum. We are grateful for the staff of the library and the community that allows us to do this.

Fall Quarterly Meeting: The perfect storm of events
![]() |
Mary Knapton was the only lady board member available for our quarterly meeting so the men took over to set up and run the meeting at the the Erie Mansion B&B. Mark Wright a GHS member and owner operator of the B&B invited us to hold our meeting there and to give tours to the members and guests attending. Reports were that the meeting was a successful endeavor with Treasurer Myron Schmoldt presiding. Thanks to Bob Gillette, Mel Stickles and Richard Hoven for their efforts to help Myron by moving tables and chairs to the location. Hoven’s keys were finally found so the tables could be re-loaded and taken back to the museum. Due to illness & unavoidable absence of 5 ladies on the board of directors the vote to approve new board candidates will be held at the January meeting.
GHS Grants
We have submitted a grant request to repair our beautiful stained glass windows. We received a letter stating they may contact or visit us before the decision is made in March. Wish us luck in this process. Repair of the 1833 era windows according to the estimate is around 12,000 to do the complete project. Great strides have been accomplished by this society since acquiring the Brick Church Museum and we still have more work to do.
Work will begin on the Mill Museum soon thanks to a grant obtained through Bob Oaks and many long hours Ruth and Joan put in to fill out the forms, multiple phone calls and an inspection meeting to bring this about. Jamie Young will be doing the work with building and grounds chairperson Mel Stickles assistance to answer questions that may arise.

December 5th GHS members were seen at St. John’s Christmas Bazaar. It was a good way to promote our society, sell some of our gift shop items & family bricks for Heritage Park and to recruit new members. Myron, Cheryl, Carol, Ruth and Sherryle took turns at the table. Later Ruth and Sherryle opened the museum to give folks a chance to enjoy our Christmas decorations. Display was by Ruth Gillette our talented Display chairperson.
Wayne Historians Meeting
Carol Bailey and Sherryle Godkin attended the Wayne Historians Meeting held at the Wayne County Museum and enjoyed a luncheon supplied by the Museum. A lively exchange of information is always on the agenda as we share what is happening in our own communities, museums and historical societies. It is a forum in which we can seek out information related to our own museum operations and get suggestions. We have a recent donation of a 45 star flag which was taken to meeting to find out how we can best prevent further deterioration of the fabric. We share ideas on cost savings, grants, fundraising efforts and other topics of mutual interest.
Peter Evans our Wayne County Historian shared that On April 24th the Landmark Society will have its 24th Annual Preservation Conference. It is open to the public but registration is strongly suggested. Anyone with a home or building 50 years or older might find this very informative and beneficial to attend. The title of the event is Saving the Past, Sustaining the Future. Preservation Strategies for Challenging Times. This will be held in Palmyra so it is easily accessible for Wayne County residents. January 2010 Quarterly Meeting
In January our Quarterly Meeting our Program Chair Carol Bailey suggested and board supported the decision to have a Show and Tell program. Members and guests are invited to bring items related to Galen to show and tell about the item. This is a quick mention so you can be going through your possessions to find something common, old, unusual or rare that is related to our area. It is only limited to what you can carry. With large items a photo to display or pass would do.
Guests and Gifts
As you might have surmised we encourage you to bring a guest to the meeting. We are a small group of people who share a common goal. To preserve our heritage and items for our children and grandchildren, to learn about our community roots and to share with anyone who wishes to visit or participate.
We welcome any and all who would wish to join us. Gift memberships are available for different levels and a stocking stuffer for a student would cost only 2 dollars for the year.
THANK YOU Joan and Jerry
Our December board meeting was the farewell to Joan Thoms our Secretary of the Board of Directors after 6 years of service. The board is grateful for her service advice and guidance. Jerry Fremouw is also leaving us as being elected mayor of our village creates a conflict of interest. It also is an availability issue due to the duties and meetings he must attend as our Mayor. The society will miss both of their contributions to the board. New faces will bring new ideas and experiences to the board and we will welcome new members with gratitude for their upcoming service. New board member candidates will be posted soon.
