GHS Events: Summer 2009

Summer Hours

We are now open for summer hours: each Saturday and Sunday from 1-3, special events and during the car show farmers' market Thursdays. Our calendar can be printed off the web site if you wish. Anyone wishing to visit the museums for a tour or research may call one of the numbers listed on the front of our building and a key holder will respond or arrange for individual or group entrance.

Summer Display

Our Summer Display is in the process of being assembled as you can witness when you visit the Brick Church. The theme is Down on the Farm and our Display committee chair, Ruth Gillette, has done a great job. Display areas include Thoms Maple Syrup, Hoven antique tools, Gillette and Stickles car and truck models, Bailey’s barn structure and household objects sorted from our own collections.

Hoffman Grant

We have mailed our Hoffman Grant Request papers for 2009. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to get projects done thanks to grants and gifts without dipping into our operating funds which are needed elsewhere. This year's Hoffman request is intended to pay for the new gravel pathway for the lower entrance at the Mill. Before and after photos of path are shown below. Still some landscape work and grass seeding is planned to complete this project. Mel Stickles, our building and grounds chairperson, has several projects underway at this time.

New Museum Gift Shop Offerings

On a recent stop at the Herkimer Museum, I admired the gift shop items and received information on the companies that supply them. Our gift shop chair, Cheryl Bonnell, has ordered some items to refresh our gift shop area. We will soon be offering a new selection of historical folk toys and booklets at the museum.

In addition, we now have the new Wayne County Historical Society's Museum of Wayne County History Calendar for sale in our museum. Old Bags of Wayne County and Other Beautiful Accessories have models representing historical societies across Wayne County. The men's version 2 years ago was a very successful fund raiser for the museum and they hope to have the ladies generate the same success.

Stained Glass Window Repair

We are awaiting an estimate for repair of our stained glass windows which are 1800 era and extremely brittle. Building and Grounds Chair, Mel Stickles, and Sherryle Godkin met with the Valerie O’Hara, 1976 graduate from RIT representing Pike Stained Glass. (Mel Stickles attended the Baptist Church as a child and knows more about this building and its history than most.) This could be a costly venture so we will be looking for grant monies to finance this effort. The young woman, who is an expert in stained glass, also does a slide presentation on the history of glass and hopefully our Programs chair, Carol Bailey, will be able to book her for this fall. The website for Pike Stained Glass and list of accomplishments is impressive. See (http://www.pikestainedglassstudios.com/)

Wayne Historians Organization Meeting

On June 11, we were pleased to host the WHO (Wayne Historians Organization) meeting. Representatives from Historical Societies and Historians meet to share ideas and information. We learn a lot over bag lunches at these sessions. The guest speaker for this event was Preston Pierce from Rochester Regional Library Council.

Clyde Savannah 4th Graders Visit Museums

On June 16th visitors to our museums were the Clyde-Savannah 4th graders led by Pam Anstee, Linda Carnavele, Sue Yonda, Steve Cottrell, Jill Kise and Josh Rice. The students separated in two groups and toured both museums. Ruth Gillette and Mel Stickles were guides in the Mill Museum, and Mel took time to stand in the pulpit and explain old time church memorabilia we have assembled within. Sherryle Godkin led the tour and answered questions at the Brick Church. The children were wide eyed and excited to see the museum and were encouraged to bring their parents and siblings to visit soon.

Stow Exhibit

June 17th Sabrina Henneman and Sue Hodge met with Ruth Gillette and Sherryle Godkin to view the Stow exhibit and borrow the Stow Law Diploma to replicate digitally for their display at the Genesee Country Museum Stow exhibit. They will return our original and give us a digitally reproduced copy that has been enhanced to show the faded ink. We will have a copy of original given to us at no cost and perhaps a surprise copy, or cd we can get a copy from, of one of their originals to use in our display. Our original document will then be stored in a manner to prevent further deterioration. Genesee Country Museum is in the process of acquiring digitally enhanced copies of their original documents to use in their displays. This effort is beyond our means financially and physically but may be an area we can research for grants to finance the cost. We learned quite a bit with their friendly advice on preservation, grants and other shared interests.

On behalf of Galen Historical Society we presented the Genesee Country Museum with one of our maps of Clyde in 1857 which we have framed and for sale in our gift shop area.
